Using a Hydration Rucksack to Avoid Hydration Problems in Sports

The average male adults body is made up of around 60-65% water, this fact is surprising in itself but what’s more surprising, and what most people don’t realise is just how important water is to a healthy functioning body. Water has many uses in the body including temperature regulation, pressure maintenance in cells, lubrication and elimination of waste products to name just the more common ones. In short, water is possible the most essential nutrient that your body requires to function properly. And this is particularly important in sports people. The use of a hydration rucksack enables you to easily manage your hydration during sport in a way that no other device can; but more on hydration bladders later.

During hard exercise, such as sport, your body excretes moisture onto your skin, this moisture then evaporates and in doing so cools your body down. This is an essential physiological function without which we would overheat quickly and become ill. There are two main side effects of this sweating, this first is moisture loss and the second is loss of salts and minerals from the bloodstream and cells. If this fluid and these salts are not replaced this can be problematical both in terms of loss of performance and general well being. These losses can cause blood to thicken, making your heart work harder and a lack of salt can cause cramps, fatigue dizziness and vomiting. By now you get the picture, you must replace lost fluids and salts that you lose when exercising hard and probably by now you realise why a hydration rucksack is so important.

So why do many athletes and sportsmen suffer from reduced performance due to de-hydration during sport? Because until fairly recently, when an ingenious device called a hydration rucksack, was developed; taking hydration during exercise meant stopping taking fluid on board and then continuing on having lost valuable time. Enter the hydration rucksack, for which all sportspeople should be eternally grateful. The hydration rucksack is a rucksack which contains a rubber sack called a bladder, which has a tube and mouthpiece which are held close to the user’s mouth by a series of straps. The mouthpiece has a special valve, called a bite valve, which opens and releases fluid from the bladder when the user bites down on it. This allows one to continually hydrate whilst exercising and thus easily avoids the problems described above.

Using a hydration rucksack could well make the difference between being a sports master or a sports disaster, and the best part is they’re very cheap to buy. The hydration rucksack is a highly recommended piece of kit for all serious sports people.
